Mumbai, September 2
Investigators questioned both former Star India CEO Peter Mukerjea and his wife together for the suspected murder of the latter’s daughter 24-year-old Sheena Bora on Wednesday.
Mukerjea came to the station to the Khar police station this morning a little after Indrani, her ex-husband Sanjeev Khanna and driver Shyam Rai — the three who are suspected of committing the offence — were brought to the station,
A team of investigators also searched Peter Mukerjea's Worli house while another team in Kolkata is believed to have seized Khanna's laptop.
Sources claim investigators questioned all three suspects as well as Peter in order to verify stories in a case that has already seen statements change several times.
This was perhaps the first time all four were questioned together since Indrani was arrested on August 24.
Indrani Mukerjea, a former media executive, was arrested for the suspected murder of Sheena Bora, her daughter from a previous relationship, in April 2012 over what the police suspect was a financial dispute.
Khanna and Indrani’s driver, Shyam Rai, are suspected of helping her commit the crime.
While Peter Mukerjea is believed to have reported to the police station last week to record his statement, the Mumbai police had turned him away, telling him to report when he was called.
Indrani, Sanjeev Khanna and Shyam Rai will remain in police custody until September 5.
Peter Mukerjea, who married Indrani 13 years ago and set up a media company with her, had initially claimed he unaware of Sheena’s real relationship with his wife as she had been introduced as her sister.
Later, however, he admitted Sheena had informed him that she was his stepdaughter, but he disbelieved her. Peter also claimed Rahul Mukerjea, Sheena’s fiancé and his son from a previous marriage, also told him in 2011 that she was Indrani’s daughter, but he chose not to believe it.
The 24-year-old is suspected to have been strangled and her body burnt and dumped in a forest in Raigad, about 84 km from Mumbai. Her charred remains were discovered a month after the crime. Police had then treated the body as unclaimed.
Meanwhile, Indrani Mukerjea is suspected to have maintained hat Sheena had shifted to the US.
The Raigad police are now inquiring into why no case was registered when the body was found dumped in the forest in Pen in 2012. — PTI
