Replace toll tax contractors with technology: SC

The Supreme Court today advised the government to take advantage of technology to replace contractors in toll collection.

The Delhi Government had sought time to study a report for issuing radio frequency identification devices (RFIDs) to vehicles coming to Delhi for collection of toll and environment compensation charge (ECC). Under the RFID scheme, vehicle owners paid the toll and other taxes in advance which were entered on the device on the windscreen. Each time the vehicle crossed the toll plaza, the amount to be paid was charged automatically.

The SC has imposed ECC of Rs 700-1,300 on each truck entering Delhi. It took strong exception to contracts to private companies for collecting toll and cess. — TNS
