A Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh member who set himself on fire over Dalit protests that erupted on April 2 died on Monday, an official of the organisation said.

RSS Nagar Karyavahak Raghuveer Prasad Gupta tried to immolate himself on Sunday morning after his daily shakha meeting. Senior RSS Pracharak Ranjeet Singh said on Sunday that he had written suicide letters to the Sangh claiming that the protests were part of a conspiracy to split society. He claimed in the letter that the decision to kill himself was his own and that it should not be blamed on his family.

Gupta bought some incendiary after the meeting at the Vaishali Nagar shakha that he headed, and set himself aflame. Some passersby tried to put him out and eventually called for an ambulance.

Gupta suffered 70 per cent burn injuries and was first taken Sawai Man Singh Hospital, which referred him to a hospital in Delhi. However, he couldn’t make it.

This body is now being brought down from Delhi to Jaipur.
