New Delhi, April 8

The Supreme Court on Friday sought the Centre's response to a PIL by former Law Minister Ashwani Kumar seeking old age homes in every district of the country.

A Bench headed by Chief Justice TS Thakur also asked National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) to assist the court in deciding the case.

The Bench said it would involve the states in the case at a later stage, if necessary.

Kumar said the country had a large number of old people and their number was growing. Most of them were living in poverty -- without any roof over their heads and proper clothes and food.

There were several central laws and schemes for their welfare, but all these were either not implemented or had become defunct.
