The Supreme Court on Monday stayed a Rajasthan High Court verdict declaring ‘Santhara’ as illegal and passed an interim order endorsing the Jain community’s practice of fast unto death.
A Bench headed by Chief Justice HL Dattu issued the order on two petitions filed by the community.
The SC also agreed to go into the Constitutional validity of the practice by issuing notice and granting leave in the case.
Senior Advocates Harish Salve and Abhishekh Singhvi appeared for the petitioners, but the Bench agreed to consider the issue without hearing them much.
