The Delhi Police today constituted a special investigation team (SIT) under Additional DCP Manishi Chandra to trace Najeeb Ahmed, a JNU student missing from his hostel for five days, on the directions of Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh.

Angry students, alleging inaction, had laid siege to the university’s administrative block, holding Vice-Chancellor Prof M Jagadesh Kumar and 12 others hostage for hours.

The police announced a cash reward of Rs 50,000 for anyone providing a lead on Najeeb’s whereabouts, putting up posters with his photograph at various places. Nupur Prasad, Additional DCP, debunked the kidnap theory, adding a laptop, phone and some medicines had been seized from Najeeb’s room.

The JNU Students’ Union, expressing “dissatisfaction”, said it would continue with its stir with a protest outside the Ministry of Home Affairs tomorrow. It wants ABVP students who had allegedly assaulted Najeeb last week, leading to his disappearance, be kept away from the hostel premises for an impartial probe. It also wants an FIR registered in the matter.

But the JNU administration says Najeeb's mother has already registered an FIR and letters written by it have been used as supporting documents.
