Three graduates of Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University who raised slogans against Prime Minister Narendra Modi at a convocation function here on Friday were later made to leave the hostel in which they had been provided temporary accommodation as guests.

The three students who are Dalit, and have completed their LLM from the university, had come to receive their degrees at the convocation. They had been provided accommodation in the hostel to attend the function, but were evicted after the incident.

The students seated in the auditorium had suddenly stood up and raised slogans against the Prime Minister as soon as he rose to address the gathering at the convocation function. They were immediately evicted by the police and detained at Ashiana police station for questioning.

At the function, the Prime Minister had broken his silence on the suicide of a 26-year-old Dalit scholar of the University of Hyderabad, saying Mother India had lost a son.

In his 40-minute address during the convocation, Modi expressed grief at a precious life like that of Rohith Vemula being forced to commit suicide.

Rohith’s suicide recently after his and four other Dalit students’ suspension last year has been at the centre of a nationwide controversy whether the Centre was responsible for creating circumstances that led to the suicide.

The NDA government, facing charges of being anti-Dalit following the Hyderabad incident, two days back revoked the suspension of the remaining four students.
