The government today said that a common perception of the Line of Actual Control (LAC) on the India-China border could help contain “avoidable situations” as Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar refuted reports on “incursion” by Chinese troops in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand on July 22, saying it was an act of “transgression”.

Meanwhile, China responded cautiously, saying it needed to verify the “authenticity of the reports on incursion”, asserting that PLA soldiers had always abided by agreements to maintain peace.

In Parliament today, Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar said, “The LAC is not demarcated. There are areas where both sides have differing perceptions. Barhoti is one such area. There was no incursion, just transgression, which has been settled.”

Minister of State for External Affairs MJ Akbar said, “From time to time, on account of differences in the perception of the LAC, situations have arisen on the ground that could have been avoided, if we had a common perception of LAC.”
