Mathura, February 20

Two policemen, including a head constable, were killed and as many others injured when they were trying to nab cow smugglers under Chatta tehsil here, the police said today.

The incident took place last night when the policemen, attached to Jait police outpost, tried to intercept a vehicle carrying cows near Azizpur village under Kosi Kalan police station, DSP Atul Kumar Srivastava said.

He said that when signalled to stop, the smugglers tried to flee with their vehicle by hitting the barrier, he said.

The vehicle ran over home guard Ghan Shyam and then collided with the police van resulting into injuries to head Constables Ram Vakil and Rajeev and Home Guard Bhanu Pratap.

The vehicle, which was laden with cows and going towards Kosi Kalan village, finally fell in a roadside ditch, he said.

Home guard Ghan Shyam died on the spot.

“The injured were rushed to a Mathura-based private hospital, from where they were shifted to SN Medical College, Agra where Vakil succumbed to the injuries,” he said.

The condition of Constable Rajeev and Home Guard Bhanu Pratap is stated to be stable.

Two teams have been formed to nab the accused who managed to flee, abandoning the vehicle, he said.  — PTI
