Lucknow/Dadri (UP), Oct 6
The communally sulfurous Dadri case, in which a mob lynched a man following rumours of cow slaughter and beef consumption, took a bizarre turn with the Uttar Pradesh government today failing to mention as much in its report to the Home Ministry. The UP police, on the other hand, sought action against Union Minister Mahesh Sharma, BJP MLA Sangeet Som and BSP leader Naseemuddin Siddiqui for allegedly violating prohibitory orders in Bishada village, where the incident took place.
Tension mounted in Dadri today with the recovery of the body of a youth, whose family alleged frequent police raids and harassment following the lynching incident.
The report sent to the Home Ministry today said Mohammed Iqlakh and his son Danish were attacked by some unidentified people over unconfirmed allegations of having consumed "pratibandhit pashu ka maans" (meat of an animal prohibited from slaughter).
Inspector General of Police (law and order) Satish Ganesh said: “It’s a factual report listing the sequence of events, action taken by the district administration, copy of the FIR, details of compensation sanctioned for the victims, security arrangements in the village etc.”
On the action taken following the incident, the report said some suspects have been picked up following preliminary investigation. Without going into details of the possible motive behind the killing, the report said further probe is on.
The report also mentions political leaders’ visits to Bishada and details of what they said to the villagers and the media.
In volatile Dadri, the 24-year-old youth found dead today was identified as Jay Prakash.
His family alleged that he was being harassed by the police despite his name not figuring on the list of absconders being hunted for Iqlakh’s killing. "There are visible signs on the deceased person's body suggesting the cause and time of death. Investigation has been taken up but no conclusions can be drawn until the post-mortem report is obtained," said SI Ranvir Singh.
"The police are raiding houses in the village every day, leading to immense tension. They are harassing all," alleged Hari Ram Singh, a villager. The police confirmed Prakash was not among the absconding accused.
