Hitting the campaign trail at the heart of erstwhile Ahom Kingdom in Assam, BJP president Amit Shah today wooed voters by singing panegyrics to the Ahom warriors of past who defeated Mughal invaders in the battle of Saraighat.

“It was the brave Ahom warriors who saved your motherland Assam by defeating invading Mughals in a historic battle. Today, the BJP is presenting you with probably the last opportunity to protect your identity and motherland from the unabated silent invasion from across the border from Bangladesh,” Shah said, addressing two back-to-back election rallies at Sivasagar and Sonari in Sivasagar district in eastern Assam today.

The BJP has fielded Surabhi Rajkumari and former All Assam Students ‘Union leader Tapan Gogoi in Sivasagar and Sonari Assembly constituencies, respectively. Both constituencies are now represented by the Congress that has traditional stronghold among Ahom and tea tribe voters there.

“Give the BJP a chance to rule Assam with Sarbanada Sonowal as the Chief Minister so that Assam can be freed from the mounting pressure of unabated illegal migration from Bangladesh,” Shah said.
