New Delhi, January 28

Seven-year itch makes many married partners go in different directions. So what happens when an art fair turns seven? Well, the founder of the India Art Fair, Neha Kirpal, realised the need to inject a fresh dose of energy. Thus, the seventh edition of the India Art Fair, all set to unveil on January 29 in New Delhi, promises to be more vibrant, glamorous and, of course, more artistic than ever before.

Artistic director Girish Shahane has planned the entire lay out as well as special sections which are likely to stop viewers in their tracks. For a start, there is graffiti by street artist Daku running all over the permanent facade, a tent installation by renowned artist Francesco Clemente. Among the many firsts are daily performance acts, site specific installations, spotlight series punctuated by book launches and several interactive sessions.

Gravitas will be the defining thread of the Speakers’ Forum that will witness some thought-provoking sessions on art conducted by who’s who of the art world Adam Szymczyk, Artistic Director of documenta; Dr Venu Vasudevan, Director General of the National Museum, Delhi; and Jeremy Deller, leading artist and creator of the British pavilion at the 2013 Venice Biennale.

Kirpal also understands the need to make art viewing an all encompassing experience. So if art be the food of life, food by itself, too, is an integral part of it. A cigar lounge on the rooftop will cater to the foodies among art lovers.

To showcase the best of artistic work, the number of galleries has been deliberately brought down. Though art fairs are about big names and astronomical price tags, Neha insists there will be affordable art too. The works are priced between Rs 1 lakh to Rs 10 crore. The fair has gone out of the way to rope in architects, vice-presidents of corporations and has an outreach programme to attract visitors from other cities.

Global statement, as Neha cares to call the fair, or not, like always it would debunk set notions about what art is and more importantly how it ought to be viewed. Easily accessible and with its renewed lifestylish twist, the failr will once again remind art lovers to enjoy art in its full glory, certain blinkers need to be shed.

Things to watch out for

  • Adding glamour to the glittering affair would be celebs Hrithik Roshan, Arjun Rampal and Jacqueline Fernandez among others
  • A special pavilion is dedicated to Pakistani art. A session at the Speakers’ Forum will provide a rare insight into it
