Flourish in animal kingdom

Dr. Harish Kumar Verma

With the establishment of Guru Angad Dev Veterinary & Animal Sciences University (GADVASU) at Ludhiana (and similar veterinary universities in other states of India), veterinary subject has earned much attention in the region. White Revolution which followed Green Revolution opened doors to a new profession of livestock rearing on commercial lines. With continuous efforts of cooperatives through ‘Operation Flood,’ India soon climbed to the number one position in milk production in the world.

There is a growing concern about food safety and its deteriorating nutritional content. To maintain quality of animal products — milk, meat and eggs — we need veterinarians. They can practice at government or private veterinary hospitals or start their own clinics. Animal husbandry departments of state and central government also hire them. Job roles in these departments come with many responsibilities.

GADVASU, Ludhiana, started functioning in April 2006 to promote the livestock production, health and prevention of the diseases through integrated teaching, research and extension programmes. GADVASU has developed dynamic resident instructions in the College of Veterinary Science, College of Dairy Science and Technology, College of Fisheries and School of Animal Biotechnology.

College of Fisheries:

To cater to the demand of fast-developing fisheries sector, the College of Fisheries is well equipped with laboratory research and field facilities to produce professionally and technically qualified manpower.

The successful completion of B.F.Sc. and M.F.Sc. ensure better job opportunities at state fisheries department, universities, fisheries institutes, private fisheries, hatcheries, processing industry, aquaculture production industry, both in India and abroad. One can also start one’s own enterprise or consultancy service.

Eligibility: Class XII or equivalent with physics, chemistry, biology and English from a recognised board with at least 50 per cent marks in aggregate.

No. of seats: 50

Every year GADVASU conducts Common Entrance Test (CET) in June to handpick candidates for these courses. One is required to apply online for various UG programmes for academic session 2018-19. For more information, check out (www.gadvasu.in)

College of Veterinary Science

Veterinary science deals with diagnosis and treatment of diseases in animals. Doctors who treat animals are called veterinarians, veterinary surgeons or vets. To become a veterinarian, one must pursue bachelor’s degree in veterinary science (called B.V.Sc. and AH). The five-and-half-year programme is designed to equip graduates with knowledge and skills essential for a successful veterinary career. After the completion of the programme, graduates can register with the Punjab State Veterinary Council or Veterinary Council of India as registered veterinary practitioners. For those interested in studying further, there are Masters of Veterinary Science (M.V.Sc.) and PhD courses in 16 disciplines for academic careers.

Eligibility: Class XII or equivalent with physics, chemistry, biology and English from a recognised board with at least 50 per cent marks in aggregate, excluding optional subject.

No. of seats: 60 at GADVASU campus. 80 at Khalsa College of Veterinary & Animal Sciences, Amritsar

School of Animal Biotechnology

GADVASU started undergraduate programme of four-year duration, B.Tech (biotechnology) from the academic session 2017-18. Biotechnology is a science that applies the principles of biochemistry and biology for the study and manipulation of living organisms for various applications like medical, veterinary, agricultural and environmental. School of Animal Biotechnology is already offering master’s and PhD in biotechnology. The school has dedicated faculty with international exposure and is involved in basic and applied research, spanning a wide spectrum of areas, including genomics, molecular diagnostics, vaccinology, stem and cell biology, cancer biology, proteomics and bioinformatics. The pass-out students will seek placement in the industry, vaccine institutes, pharmaceuticals, research institutes and diagnostics.

Eligibility: Class XII or equivalent with physics, chemistry, biology/mathematics and English from a recognised board in India.

No. of Seats: 25

College of Dairy Science and Technology

Dairy Technology is all about handling milk — from production to consumption and inbetween processing, packaging, storage, transport and physical distribution. Based on the sciences of biochemistry, bacteriology, and nutrition, dairy technology applies the principles of engineering. Its main objectives are to prevent spoilage, improve quality, increase shelf-life, and make milk edible and safe for human consumption. After completing B.Tech. (Dairy Technology), a four-year programme, one can work as a supervisor at a dairy plant or become dairy consultant or take up entrepreneurial ventures in milk plants i.e. ice-cream or cheese units, etc.

ELIGIBILITY: Class XII or equivalent with physics, chemistry, mathematics and English from a recognised board with at least 50 per cent marks in aggregate, excluding optional subject.

No. of Seats: 50

Know facts: A candidate who has cleared biology and math at Class XII can appear in the common entrance test, simultaneously for B.V.Sc. & A.H./B.F.Sc. and B.Tech, Dairy Technology.
