LIP’s Balwinder Bains and Simarjit Bains greet supporters.

As expected, the important seat of Atam Nagar was won by Lok Insaf Party leader Simarjit Singh Bains by a margin of 16,913 votes. Bains polled 53,421 votes in his favour, while his Congress rival Kanwaljeet Singh Karwal polled 36,508 votes. The security was tight outside SCD Government College, where the counting of Atam Nagar constituency was going on. Gurmit Singh Kular, an industrialist and first-time contestant from SAD-BJP was placed third.

A posse of police was deployed inside and outside the college as the fate of "heavyweights" was to be decided. Both Kular and Karwal visited the counting area in the morning.

At the same time, Simarjit Singh Bains was sure of his victory ever since the election scene picked up in Punjab. He supported AAP and claimed that the AAP-LIP would form the government in Punjab with a majority.
