Ropar, January 13
The declaration of Youth Congress leader Brinder Singh Dhillon as the party nominee from the Ropar Assembly constituency is likely to cause a revolt against the party high command by local Congress leaders.
Majority of Congress leaders, including former minister Ramesh Dutt Sharma, had already announced to protest against any candidate named from outside the district.
Though Dhillon claimed to be a resident of Anandpur Sahib, local party leaders consider him as an outsider only.
The resentment among the local Congress leaders had started brewing when Dhillon’s name was being discussed as a potential candidate two months ago. Later, Congress leaders, including former minister Sharma, PPCC general secretary Sukhwinder Singh Whisky, PPCC secretary Satwinder Singh Chairrian and former district party president Amarjit Singh Saini, passed a resolution to oppose Dhillon’s candidature.
On January 5, these leaders had even warned the high command against fielding Dhillon from Ropar.
Sharma and Chairrian today said the party’s decision to field Dhillon from Ropar was disappointing.
