Chandigarh, January 13

The Chief Electoral Officer has sought a report from the Punjab Government on its decision to issue a notification to acquire land for a 200-ft-wide road connecting New Chandigarh with the international airport.

The notification was issued on January 3, a day before the model code of conduct came into effect. Besides New Chandigarh, the road will also connect Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Badal’s luxury hotel ‘The Oberoi Sukhvilas Resorts & Spa’ to the airport.

A senior official said the Election Commission had written to the Secretary, Department of Housing and Urban Development. Chief Electoral Officer VK Singh said, “Once the report is received by us, we will analyse it as well as the complaint and take a decision accordingly.”

EC officials said they had acted on a complaint submitted by the Aam Aadmi Party.
