The election authorities today rejected the nominations of 695 of the 1,941 candidates who had filed their papers. The nominations of 1,243 candidates were accepted, while a decision on three nominations was kept pending due to technical reasons.

January 18 was the last day of filing nominations. A scrutiny of documents filed in all 117 Assembly segments was conducted by the respective returning officers today.

Namesake misses out

Jalandhar: The nomination papers of an Independent candidate from Sultanpur Lodhi, a namesake of Congress candidate Navtej Singh Cheema, were rejected by the Returning Officer on Thursday. Dr Charumita Shekhar, RO, Sultanpur Lodhi, said, “We rejected his papers on the ground that he came with a single proposer, whereas an Independent should have a minimum of 10 proposers. He also did not provide a certified copy of the electoral rolls and had just attached a digitally downloaded list, which is not acceptable.”
