Muktsar again goes against the grain

Muktsar: The Muktsar Assembly constituency has again elected an MLA who will sit in the Opposition. This time, the voters picked Akali candidate Kanwarpal Singh Rozy Barkandi, even as the Congress was voted to power. In the 2012 and 2007 elections, when the SAD came to power, the constituency sent Congress nominees to the Assembly. In 2002, the Congress formed the government, but this Assembly segment chose an Independent as its representative.

Cong loses Garhshankar, ‘rebel’ celebrates

Garhshankar: The Congress lost only one seat out of seven in Hoshiarpur district. The party was relegated to the third spot from Garhshankar. Congress workers and leaders were shocked to see celebrations taking place at the office of party leader Nimisha Mehta. She also offered laddoos to passersby. After being denied the party ticket, Nimisha had filed nomination papers as an Independent. Later, she had announced not to contest the elections after the senior leadership tried to pacify her. When contacted, she said, “We were celebrating our party’s victory in the state. We also celebrated Capt Amarinder Singh’s birthday.”
