In an jolt to the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) in Dera Bassi, some senior Akali leaders, including Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) member Nirmail Singh Jaula and SAD working committee member Amrik Singh Malikpur, joined the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Lalru on Monday.
Welcoming the SAD leaders into the party, Sarabjit Kaur, AAP candidate from Dera Bassi, said this would help strengthen the party ahead of the poll. Nirmail Singh Jaula said he decided to quit the party due to the denial of the ticket to him and the humiliation faced at the hands of SAD-BJP candidate N K Sharma.
Nirmail Singh further said, Capt Kanwaljit Singh, a former SAD minister, enjoyed a good reputation in this area as well as in Punjab. “He had initiated many development works in the constituency during his tenure. We are proud of him,” he added.
The other workers who joined AAP are Harvinder Singh, former member, Block Samiti; Gurvinder Singh, vice-chairman, Zila Parishad; Surinder Singh Dharamgarh and Naib Singh.
