Don’t labour over maternity leave

In the year 2017, the Indian Parliament recognised the need to revise maternity benefits to female employees of both public and private establishments. This was owing to their increased participation and contribution in the working sector. By promising women job security and to some extent, financial refuge, the initiative has empowered female employees. But, there still are many avenues, which necessitate interventions. A number of organisations are working on these lines.

Government and private organisations working for this parity is only one aspect of it, women employees who are incumbent of these reforms also have to act as important players in this scenario. There are certain aspects that can be worked upon when you are expecting and are still employed. Here is listing a few.

Inform your employer in time

It is recommended that you share the information with your immediate head, both in case of planning a child or even if you are already expecting. Don’t wait for it to become apparent, as it reduces the seniors’ faith in your commitment towards the organisation. If you are going on a leave after a few months, your office has every right to know about your pregnancy status. The sooner you break the news, the better it is, as the office will also get ample time to plan accordingly. This is even more pertinent to new job, as hiding such information is unethical. Chances are that you might not be welcomed back the same way.

Keep the communication channels open

You must discuss your concerns with your organisation. If there is something that can affect your peace of mind throughout your pregnancy period, share it with the HR team or your boss. Also, speak to the HR department in detail about terms and conditions of maternity leave, benefits and your rejoining. Make sure that you don’t jostle with any confusion, which may create problems for you in future. Also, be forthright with your reporting head about any doubts that you have about pre and post maternity leave roles.

Get your documentation in place

A good organisation will give you benefits on lines of medical cover, post-natal care, financial benefits, etc. during your maternity leave. Make it a point to check what all documents or paperwork is needed to avail them. Do this as soon as you start with your last trimester. It is also helpful if you secure a copy of organisation’s maternity leave policy for your reference.

Don’t use your condition as a handicap

Be sincere towards your organisation. Do not shirk work. If the organisation is being supportive and considerate towards your condition, it is your moral duty as well to cooperate till the time you can.

Raise a concern wherever needed

It’s your right to register or contest any discrimination that you perceive is being done to you because of your condition. Be open about your feelings and discuss the situation with your superior or the HR as per policy.

Don’t push yourself

You are in a phase where your health is of prime importance; keep that in mind when working. Take very good care of yourself, eat healthy, rest well and do not over exert. Similarly do not over expect from the organisation. Do not take the employer for granted and do not take advantage.
