Batala, February 4

A 22-year-old girl belonging to a village under the jurisdiction of the Behrampur police station in Gurdaspur district, was allegedly raped by her first cousin and two others in a moving ca and thrown out of the vehicle in front of the Industrial Training Institute (ITI) building on the Gurdaspur-Pathankot road late last night.

The Gurdaspur police claimed that the crime had occurred near Naushera Majha Singh village, which comes under the jurisdiction of the Sekhwan police station in the Batala police district. Hence, an FIR should be registered by the Batala police.

The Batala Senior Superintendent of police (SSP), Inderbir Singh, said a case under Section 376 of the IPC had been registered with the Sekhwan police station. He said a woman police officer had recorded the statement of the victim who had been admitted to the Gurdaspur Civil Hospital. “We have registered a rape case against Ganesh Kumar, Kashmiri Lal and Roop Lal on the victim’s statement, all residents of Indira Colony in Amritsar,” the SSP said.

He said a hunt for the culprits was on. Ganesh Kumar, the girl’s first cousin, was believed to have plotted the crime. A senior officer said the victim went to the Amritsar jail to meet her brother yesterday. On her way back, she came across her cousin and his friends, who had, perhaps, been stalking her. Ganesh told the victim that he and his friends were on their way to Pathankot and would drop her in Gurdaspur. But unofficial sources said the girl was forcibly taken away in the car and raped.

The Gurdaspur SSP, Gurpreet Singh Toor, said the victim approached one Ram Lal for help who called up the Gurdaspur police. Later, the Batala police took over the investigations and based on the victim’s medical report, registered a rape case.

A case has been registered. Preliminary investigations indicate the last call location of her mobile phone near Waryamkhera village.
