Jalandhar, June 30
Three children of a migrant labourer died after falling into a 12-foot-deep pit filled with rainwater in Lodhipur village of Kapurthala district today, the police said.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Gurmeet Singh said the incident took place when the children were returning to their shanty after giving food to their parents Joginder Rishikesh and Khirwa Devi, who were sowing paddy near a brick kiln.
Joginder was living with his family near the brick kiln for the past six months.
On their way back, Joginder’s son Raja (12), and daughters Shobha (7) and Gauri (3) fell into the pit dug up for making bricks. On hearing their cries, their five-year-old sister Mahawati and parents, along with other labourers, ran towards the pit. But by then, the children had drowned.
Kotwali police station SHO Hargurdev Singh reached the spot on receiving the information of the incident.
The police took the body in their custody and initiated proceedings under Section 174 of the CrPC.
