Jalandhar, July 6

An ASI suffered bullet injuries in a gunfight between the police and gangsters, suspected to be behind the recent murderous attack on a DSP, at Sant Nagar in the early hours today.

The gunfight lasted for about two hours. The police arrested three gangsters, Sukhwinder Singh alias Sukha Bhau, Sukjinder Singh alias Sukhi of Bidhipur village and Fateh Singh of Nawanshahr.

They were hiding near the spot where DSP Vikramjit Panthe, who is posted at Kapurthala Modern Jail, was shot at by motorcycle-borne assailants.

The police team investigating the matter suspects that the weapons recovered today are similar to the ones used in attack on the DSP.

The police have seized two .32 bore pistols, four live cartridges, six used cartridges, a mobile phone, four cars and a motorcycle. The encounter was covered live by the media between 1 am and 4 am.

On a tip-off, the police team reached the house of the suspects and knocked at the door. The accused opened fire and rushed towards the terrace of the house. A gunfight ensued and all three accused were arrested.

Rajinder Singh, DCP, Jalandhar, said: “Assistant Sub Inspector Jagdev Singh was shot in the stomach. He was taken to hospital and is out of danger.”

The main accused, Sukha Bhau, reportedly has eight cases registered against him in Jalandhar. He was sentenced to jail for 20 years in a murder case in 2010 and was lodged in the Bathinda jail. He was out on parole.

Sukhi too had six cases against him and was lodged at the Amritsar Central Jail. He escaped on May 26 when he was taken to Jalandhar for a court hearing. Fateh Singh had a case under Section 307 of the IPC registered against him and was declared a proclaimed offender.
