Amritsar, May 29
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) today asked the Congress government to remove Power and Irrigation Minister Rana Gurjit Singh at the earliest over the mine auction row.
Addressing party volunteers at a resort here, AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal said the party would stage a protest outside Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh’s residence in Chandigarh tomorrow if no action was taken.
He said the change of guard in Punjab had not brought about any change in governance. “Like the Akalis, the Congress leaders are out to bag maximum contracts of sand mines and liquor vends.”
Kejriwal said the Congress had so far failed to fulfil its major poll promises — debt waiver for farmers, a job for every household, and smart phones for the youth. The CM should tender a public apology or face a statewide stir by AAP for not honouring the party manifesto, he added.
On his first visit to the state after the Assembly elections, Kejriwal asked state party convener Bhagwant Mann to win over disgruntled leaders. Mann announced that he would soon meet such leaders and volunteers and try to bring them back into the party fold.
On the request of party MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira, Kejriwal announced that booth and village-level party heads would soon be given considerable powers. He asked AAP volunteers to raise people’s issues with the elected leaders.
Leader of the Opposition HS Phoolka said the party’s 20 MLAs would be allocated five Assembly segments each to take up the problems of residents.
Spat outside Golden Temple
Amritsar: A heated exchange took place between mediapersons and Arvind Kejriwal’s guards during his visit to the Golden Temple. As soon as he came out of the shrine, TV journalists and camerapersons swarmed around him. The Delhi CM’s guards tried to stop mediapersons from coming near him. In the melee, a TV journalist’s mike hit Kejriwal on the face.
It led to a spat (see pic) in which expletives were hurled. Soon, Kejriwal’s security team whisked him away. Later, Congress workers showed black flags to the CM. TNS
