The Congress today accused Akali workers of attacking its office in the Khanauri grain market this evening, even as SAD supporters alleged that they were attacked by Congress workers when they were passing in front of the office.

Both parties alleged that a few of their workers were injured.

Congress candidate Rajinder Kaur Bhattal said, “Parminder Singh Dhindsa’s (Akali nominee) goons attacked my office in Khanauri. Our workers had caught SAD men distributing money in Ward No. 8. Goons were called from Haryana, while gangsters have been camping here for the past many days.”

Vikram Singh Bajwa, Bhattal’s son-in-law, said he and four party workers were standing in front of the office when 70-80 SAD workers attacked them with sharp-edged weapons and pistols.

“We saved our lives by downing the shutters of the office. Our vehicles were damaged. Three workers suffered injuries,” alleged Bajwa.

Amanveer Singh Cherry, Dhindsa’s election agent, alleged that Congress workers attacked Ram Niwas, president of the Khanauri nagar council, in the evening in Ward No 8 and fled. “When our workers were coming to their office, Congress supporters attacked them. They targeted our vehicle and then themselves damaged their own vehicles.”

SP Harpreet Sandhu, who reached the spot, said, “We are recording the statements of the injured persons. The situation is under control.”
