Sangrur, February 9

With an increase of 0.88 percentage points in today’s repolling at nine booths of the Sangrur constituency, the district jumped from the fifth position to the third in the state.

The turnout in the Sangrur has increased to 83.88 per cent, surpassing Faridkot (83.67 per cent) and Fazilka (83.48 per cent).

The turnout was higher in eight booths than on February 4. The only polling booth to witness a decline in turnout was at Government Elementary School, Gehlan village. The voting percentage dropped from 90.19 on February 4 to 87.97 .

Deputy Commissioner-cum-District Electoral Officer Abhinav Trikha confirmed the increase in turnout. “People came out in large numbers to vote after the district administration’s awareness campaign to exercise their franchise.”

Candidates, meanwhile, claimed that increase in turnout was a good sign for their parties.

Congress candidate Vijay Inder Singla said, “The Congress will win with a huge margin. The increase in the polling percentage shows that people want change. To bring the Congress in power, people came out in large numbers today and voted for the party.”

SAD’s candidate Babu Parkash Chand Garg claimed that increase in polling will benefit him as the maximum number of Dera Sacha Sauda followers had voted for him.

AAP’s Dinesh Bansal said people had rejected both the Congress and the SAD, and they had voted for change.

It was learnt that dera followers formed special teams to ensure people voted for the SAD candidate.
