Jalandhar, November 14

Nobel laureate for peace 14th Dalai Lama Tenzin Gyatso today said the results of the Bihar elections had shown that a majority of the Hindu people still believed in harmony.

The spiritual leader said this in response to a query on growing religious intolerance in the country during a media interaction on his visit to the convocation ceremony of the Lovely Professional University here. He said there were a few mischievous people, among the 1-billion Indian population, who have been creating such problems.

The Dalai Lama, however, added, “But that’s Indian politics and I do not want to get involved in that, being the longest guest of the Indian Government. I believe that politics is a technique to serve effectively rather than creating problems.”

Terming himself as an environment crusader, he said, “The deforestation and resultant melting of snow mountains was affecting the ecology of the Tibetan plateau, on the rivers of which over 4 billion people were dependent. We will take up the issue in the UN Climatic Change Conference in Paris.”

Awards bright students

The Dalai Lama honoured LPU toppers of various academic programs with gold medals. Near 4,000 youth were awarded degrees. The LPU also conferred the degree of Doctorate of Divinity, Honoris Causa, upon him for his courageous statesmanship, scientific temperament and universal benevolence.
