CHANDIGARH: Assassinated Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh’s grandson Harkirat Singh (40) died at his house in strange circumstances here today.

Assassinated Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh’s grandson Harkirat Singh (40) died at his house in strange circumstances here today. He suffered a bullet injury while cleaning his pistol that went off accidentally.

Harkirat, who was sarpanch of Kotli village in Khanna, was suffering from depression. His elder brother Gurkirat Singh is Khanna MLA. His father Tej Prakash Singh is a former minister.

Harkirat returned from Sukhna Lake at about 10 am and asked his wife for juice. As she left for the kitchen, she heard a shot. She returned and found her husband in a pool of blood. A security guard rushed Harkirat to the PGI where he died.

Inspector Neeraj Sarna, SHO, said the victim’s family had given a statement that Harkirat was cleaning his 30 mm pistol when it went off accidentally. Ludhiana MP and Harkirat’s cousin Ravneet Bittu said Harkirat had been undergoing treatment at the PGI for depression. The last rites will be performed at Kotli village. Inquest proceedings have begun.
