Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal has refused to order a CBI probe into the attack on Sikh preacher Ranjit Singh Dhadrianwale.

Interacting with the media during his Sangat Darshan here today, the CM said the state police was competent enough to handle such cases.

Replying to another query, he claimed that there was no law and order problem in the state. “One should watch news channels before commenting on the crime scenario in Punjab,” he added.

He termed controversial issues such as parallel “Jathedars” and conflict between Damdami Taksal and Dhadrianwale as minor issues. On state’s preparedness for the Operation Bluestar anniversary, Badal said paramilitary forces along with Punjab armed police and commandos had been deployed in Amritsar to tackle any untoward incident.

Replying to another query, the CM said there was no plan to advance the Assembly elections. The CM approved a plan of Rs15 crore to provide safe drinking water and toilet facility in villages of Nurpur Bedi block. He disbursed cheques worth Rs2.11 crore to 68 panchayats.

Protesters detained

The police detained at least 12 members of the Unemployed Naujawan Sabha, who were proceeding towards the Sangat Darshan venue to submit a memorandum to the CM. The police claimed that many among them were members of the Shiv Sena and they had planned to disrupt the event.

...Why not, asks Capt

Chandigarh, May 31

Supporting the demand of Ranjit Singh Dhadrianwale for a CBI probe into the attack on him on May 17 in Ludhiana, Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee president Capt Amarinder Singh today asked Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal why he was afraid of it.

Criticising Badal for rejecting the demand for a CBI probe as sought by Dhadrianwale himself, the PPCC president said two weeks had elapsed since the incident took place, still the police are not able to trace the culprits when they already have the clues after tracing the vehicles used in the attack.
