Chandigarh, January 28

Freezing cold waves swept Amritsar in Punjab on Wednesday as the minimum temperature plummeted to minus 1 degree Celsius with several other parts of Punjab and Haryana also reeling under biting chill.

As against yesterday's low of 5.2 degrees Celsius, Amritsar recorded the season's coldest night so far as minimum temperature dropped below the freezing point, settling six notches below normal.

Meanwhile, fog reduced visibility at several places in Punjab and Haryana, the Met department said.

At least two flights, including one to Mumbai and another to Delhi were delayed.

Unchahar Express train between Allahabad and Chandigarh was delayed by nearly three hours, while Sainagar Shridi-Kalka superfast Express and Lucknow-Chandigarh Express were running behind schedule by over three hours.

The minimum temperatures at Hisar, Karnal, Narnaul and Bhiwani were recorded at 6.3, 6.6, 6 and 6.8 degrees Celsius respectively, all below normal, while Ambala's low settled at 7.3 degrees Celsius.

Chandigarh, where hazy weather prevailed this morning, recorded a low at 7.7 degrees Celsius.

Ludhiana's low settled at 7 degrees Celsius, while Patiala recorded a minimum temperature at 7.4 degrees Celsius.

During the past several days, the maximum temperatures, too, have been settling in the range of 13-17 degrees Celsius at most places in the two states.
