The Haryana Government has awarded compensation to the victims of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, following the recommendations of the Justice TP Garg Commission.
Around Rs 12.07 crore have been sanctioned for 150 victims of Gurgaon and Pataudi area. Forty-two of them got their cheques today.
“It has been 32 years, but the horrific memories still haunt us. Compensation may not change things, but this gesture by the state government assures us that at least it is being acknowledged that what happened to us was wrong,” said senior vice-president of the Riots Action Committee JP Singh.
The families, which gathered at the local gurdwara here, thanked Chairperson of the National Minorities Commission Naseem Ahmed and former Secretary of the Urban Development Ministry LM Mehta; Rajesh Khullar, Principal Secretary to Chief Minister; and DC TL Satyaprakash for pushing their case.
