Malout, September 10

Twenty-one people have been tested positive for dengue in Muktsar district. Of these, 13 victims are from Malout, two each from Gidderbaha, Doda, Lambi and Alamwala.

A Health Department official said 63 samples were sent for testing to Faridkot and the results of 10 were awaited.

Dr Vikram Asija, District Epidemiologist, Muktsar, said, “We have launched an awareness campaign. We are conducting tests for free and fogging various areas. The municipal authorities too have been told to maintain cleanliness.”

Dr Jagjivan Lal, Civil Surgeon, Muktsar, said, “The number of dengue cases is high in Malout. But the residents need not worry as the situation is under control. Some dengue patients have even been discharged from the hospital. The virus has yet to claim a life.”

However, a visit to various parts of the city revealed a sorry state of affairs. Garbage was strewn around almost everywhere, providing a breeding ground to mosquitoes. Residents complained the authorities were not taking any step to tackle the problem.
