Archit Watts Tribune News Service Muktsar, April 6 A survey report of the Health Department stated that above 42 per cent of the water samples collected from Muktsar, last year, were not potable. Of the total 354 water samples collected, 149 failed the test. Some of these samples were of groundwater and canal water. These were collected from government institutions including schools, water treatment plants, waterworks and some private eateries. The worst affected is Chak Sherewala block, where 25 samples of the total 54 failed the test. In Doda block, 38 water samples of the total 91 were found non-potable. In Alamwala block, 43 samples of the 102 collected were not potable. In Lambi block, 28 samples of the total 65 did not clear the test. In Muktsar urban area, 15 water samples of the total 42 were found non-potable. Muktsar district is the worst affected with a TDS level. Earlier, in Sangu Dhaun, Bariwala and Thandewala villages, the officials of the Water Supply and Sanitation had found the TDS level of purified water to be nearly 200 parts per million (ppm), which is 100 ppm in water treated in an RO plant. The TDS level of impure water in these villages was found to be around 2,000-2,200 ppm. As per a survey conducted by the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), Mumbai, and the Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU), Amritsar, in the district, 16 water samples were tested in the past. It found uranium content to be between 0.2 and 149.7 ppb, which is more than double the permissible limit. The district is facing a lot of problems due to its contaminated groundwater. It also has the state’s highest average of 136 cancer patients per one lakh people. Though in 2012, Chief Minister had announced to spend Rs 12 crore on extensive research on contaminated groundwater, no action has been taken. The Heath Department officials said if the samples were found non-potable, the departments concerned were told to take corrective measures immediately.
