The police today detained five students of Sant Longowal Institute of Engineering and Technology (SLIET) for more than an hour this evening after the latter tried to flee in their car on being told to stop by cops near here.

The students reportedly mistook the policemen, who were in civvies, for gangsters.

Later, the police termed it a case of mistaken identity and released them.

“Fifteen police teams in civvies are on the lookout for Longowal murder accused Dalvinder Singh alias Babbal Randhawa. The car-borne students mistook our CIA team for armed gangsters and panicked,” said Sewa Singh Malhi, SP(D), Sangrur.

Earlier, an unidentified motorcycle-borne man informed Sangrur city traffic incharge Pawan Sharma that youngsters in two cars were having a heated exchange on a railway overbridge. He claimed that members of one group had firearms.

The police put up barricades on the Sangrur-Bathinda road and intercepted the youths. They tried to flee, but were nabbed and taken to the Ajit Nagar police post. Soon, the SP (D) and DSP Sandeep Wadhera reached the post.

The students’ interrogation revealed that a mix-up had taken place.
