A 55-year-old farmer allegedly committed suicide by consuming a poisonous substance at Ajitwal village in Moga district on Sunday night. Tejinder Singh had been under debt for the past few years.

His son Harmandeep Singh, in a statement to the police, said his father was under depression for many months. He had taken loans from local money lenders and was not able to repay those.

During the preliminary inquiry, it came to light that Tejinder had sold his agricultural land and his house to repay the loans, but a portion of the principal amount of loans still stood against him.

Gurdeep Singh, ASI of Ajitwal police station, said Tejinder first took loans about four years back to send his daughter abroad.

He also collected money from other sources to get a few acres of land on lease with the hope of increasing his income, but weather conditions did not favour him and he suffered losses. The police have initiated inquest proceedings under Section 174 of the CrPC into the incident.
