Sangrur, November 8
Members of the district unit of B.Ed. TET Pass Unemployed Teachers Union, Punjab, today burnt an effigy of the state government at traffic light chowk here. They were demanding the issuance of an advertisement for recruiting 15,000 unemployed teachers.
The protesters were led by state president of the union Raghbir Singh Bhawanigarh.
Earlier, they gathered at Banasar Bagh here. They held a meeting there and discussed their demands and the state government’s alleged “indifferent attitude” towards their main demand — issuance of an advertisement to recruit at least 15,000 master-cadre teachers.
State president of the union Raghbir Singh Bhawanigarh said despite conducting the teacher eligibility test (TET) for four years, the state government had provided jobs to just 3,500 teachers while thousands had been roaming on the streets without jobs.
He said the union had also decided to conduct a secret action programme on November 12 in some part of the state.
He asked the state government to issue the advertisement for recruiting 15,000 teachers in a week as it was going to conduct another TET on December 13. He said even after passing TET four years ago, many unemployed teachers had no job till today.
The protesters also warned the state government not to test their patience as they knew that without adopting a do-or-die path, the government would not accept their demands.
They said all unemployed teachers were ready to take part in the secret action programme of the union on November 12.
