Muktsar, March 6

Hailstorm and strong winds in many parts of the state have flattened the wheat crop. Farmers have demanded a special girdawari and adequate compensation from the state government.

Ranjit Singh, a marginal farmer from Gurusar village in Gidderbaha sub-division, said that the wheat crop flattened at this stage would not be able to rise again.

“Without any delay, the state government should start the procedure of special girdawari. Last year too, farmers of this particular area suffered huge losses due to the whitefly attack on cotton crop,” he said.

Meanwhile, Jagjit Singh Fattanwala, a Congress leader of Muktsar, visited Udekaran, Charewan, Haraj, Kotli Sanghar and Rahurianwali villages and demanded that the state government must pay Rs 30,000 per acre to the affected farmers as compensation.

“Farmers are already committing suicide due to financial crisis. This time, they should not be told to wait for compensation. The officials concerned must immediately swing into action,” said Fattanwala.
