Punjab Congress president Capt Amarinder Singh on Saturday announced that 35 of the 117 party tickets in the 2017 Assembly elections would be given to the youth.

He was addressing a function organised at Punjab Congress Bhawan here to announce the merger of the Youth Organisation of India (YOI) with the Congress.

He said this had been suggested by Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi. He clarified that the youth representation would be based on their hard work and contribution towards the party and not any kinship or relationship.

Spelling out his vision for the empowerment of youth, he said the Congress government would ensure “one job to each family”. He said it would include jobs in both government and private sectors, besides developing and providing entrepreneurship skills and opportunities to them.

“I am aware of your expectations and aspirations and want you not only to realise your dreams but also be part of the decision-making process at political and economic levels,” he told a gathering of youth.

He said this would be his last election and his only aim was to see smiles back on the faces of all Punjabis. “The future belongs to all of you and we in the Congress want your maximum participation in leadership and representation in the Punjab Vidhan Sabha,” he said, while appealing to them to support his mission.

“I don’t need or seek 25 years, just give me five to launch Punjab back on the path to prosperity and glory and bring back smile on every Punjabi’s face,” he said amidst a thundering applause from the youth, while referring to Sukhbir Singh Badal, who has been seeking 25 years to rule Punjab.

Amarinder said the Badals had monopolised every trade and business with the result that wealth was concentrated in a single family and its relatives. He said he would break the monopoly and ensure proper distribution of wealth.

For this, he said, the route permits would be distributed among the youth. They would also be provided soft loans for buying and operating buses. This way, he said, more families would benefit instead of a single family. He said the cable distribution, sand mining and liquor trade would also have a widespread participation of the youth.

Earlier, Amarinder announced the merger of the YOI into the Congress in the presence of hundreds of its activists led by president Rajwinder Singh Dhanaula.
