Putting the Congress in an awkward position in the run-up to the state Assembly polls, Kamaljit Brar, the son of senior Congress leader and former minister Darshan Singh Brar appeared in a sangat darshan held by Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal to seek grants for his native village on Tuesday.

He listed out the development works to be carried out in the village and was presented with a cheque of Rs 14.31 lakh. Sukhbir also promised another grant of Rs 8 lakh to Khote village for the sewerage project.

When Kamaljit came to the venue, the police swung into action and stopped him. SSP Harjit Singh Pannu had a word with him and then took him to the Deputy CM.

Meanwhile, political observers are of the view that Darshan Brar enjoys a ‘tactical’ understanding with the Badal family. While the Brar’s denied these charges, but the Congress is stunned at Kamaljit’s action.

DCC chief Col Babu Singh (retd) said that he will look into matter.

Several Congress leaders said that Kamaljit’s sitting on the ground in front of Badal to get money was unfortunate and had tarnished the image of the party in the region.
