Gurdaspur, December 10

A search operation conducted by the police in several ‘deras’ surrounding Tibri Cantonment, about 8 km from here, led to panic among the residents today.

There were rumours that the residents of Chava village, near the cantonment, had spotted four ‘kurta pyjama’-clad men who, they suspected, were terrorists. The deployment of 50 personnel from Puranashala police station to scan the deras in the morning added credence to the rumour, though the police called it a routine monthly exercise.

The Army was also seen shifting its tanks and other security apparatus to safer places. Some tanks were placed near the outer wall of the cantonment and sand bags put in place at strategic points. The security personnel from nearby Dinanagar police station were deployed at various points on the Gurdaspur-Mukerian highway. The operation lasted till noon.
