Chandigarh, July 11
Punjab DGP Suresh Arora has recommended that ace Indian women’s cricketer Harmanpreet Kaur — facing demotion from the post of DSP to constable after her graduation degree from a Meerut university was found to be fake — be given three years to complete her graduation.
A case for special exemption would be put before the Cabinet soon. The DGP has recommended that Harmanpreet may not be paid salary for three years, but would retain her DSP rank.
A native of Moga, Harmanpreet was working with the Railways before CM Capt Amarinder Singh offered her the post of DSP. She joined this March.
Harmanpreet got political support with state Congress chief Sunil Jakhar suggesting to the government to retain her rank and status in spite of her fake degree. On Wednesday, Leader of Opposition Sukhpal Khaira also seconded it. In a statement, he urged the CM not to demote Harmanpreet. “This will humiliate a girl who has done Punjab and India proud. It also amounts to trivialising her achievements”. — TNS
