Chandigarh, April 26

Adding a new twist to the ongoing race for the post of DGP Punjab, one of the aspirants, DGP (Intelligence) Dinkar Gupta, has been empanelled for Central deputation.

An official spokesperson said an Appointment Committee of the Cabinet headed by the PM approved empanelment of Gupta, IPS (1987 batch), for appointment as ADGP-level posts at the Centre on Thursday. He is the only officer from the Punjab and Haryana to be nominated.

Sources say Dinkar Gupta may opt for this posting if he is not elevated to the post of the DGP Punjab in September this year, when the incumbent DGP, Suresh Arora, is due to retire. However, it is also argued that the empanelment may strengthen his case for the top post as he has been chosen by the Union Government above other officers in the state.
