Dr Navjot Sidhu appointed chairperson of warehousing corporation

Chandigarh, April 25

In a move to placate senior party leaders, Punjab Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh on Wednesday appointed Dr Navjot Kaur Sidhu, a former MLA from Amritsar and wife of Local Bodies Minister Navjot Singh Sidhu, as Director and Chairperson of Punjab Warehousing Corporation.

She is first among the lot of leaders -- who were denied ticket during the last assembly elections -- to be given a political appointment in wake of heartburn caused among the legislators due to the recent Cabinet expansion and reshuffling of portfolios.

Local Bodies Minister Navjot Singh Sidhu and Panchayats and Rural Development Minister Tript Rajinder Bajwa also accompanied Dr Sidhu.

It is part of strategy recently worked out by senior state Congress leadership to placate different pressure groups that have been crying foul after the Cabinet expansion.

Others likely to be accommodated in the coming days are Jasbir Singh Dimpa, who was denied ticket from Amritsar, Tejinder Bittu, whose ticket was cancelled from Jalandhar, and wife a sitting MLA owing allegiance to Namdhari sect.

Next in the lot would be Dalit and OBC leaders and MLAs, who have been knocking at the door of senior leadership at Delhi before other sitting MLAs are adjusted at different positions.

The Chief Minister took to Twitter to congratulate Navjot Kaur on her appointment. “I wish her all the best and look forward to her contribution in strengthening the Corporation and its functioning,” Amarinder said.
