The police on Thursday claimed to have averted a major terror attack with the arrest of a highly educated, but radicalised youth, Inderjit Singh, alias Rinku, trained in making improvised explosive devices.

He was nabbed on Wednesday from SAS Nagar. Explosive materials, including chemicals and advanced electronic remote controls, were seized from his Ford Figo Aspire car (HR 01 AR 5972). The police said the accused, a resident of Faridabad, was an engineering graduate with an MBA degree.

A police spokesperson said preliminary interrogation revealed that he was acting at the behest of his ISI handlers, who had tasked him to carry out blasts in Punjab with explosives made from locally available chemicals and devices bought online.

The spokesperson said Inderjit, working with a Faridabad-based firm, revealed that he was contacted by the ISI on Facebook about two years ago and since then he had been interacting with them and learning to make explosives kits.

He said the Pakistani intelligence officers who radicalised Inderjit were also actively coordinating and networking the terror module that was busted on May 29 last year. The mastermind of that terror module, Harbarinder Singh of Mohali, was also in contact with Inderjit Singh through Facebook.

A case has been registered against him under Sections 17, 18 and 20 of the Prevention of Unlawful Activities Act and 3, 4 and 5 of the Explosive Substances Act.
