The farmers of about 12 villages staged a protest outside the DC office here on Thursday against the scarcity of canal-based irrigation water.

The farmers of Sabuana, Jandwals Kharta, Odian, Puran Patti, Bamnwala Hanuwanta, Abhun, Karnikhera, Awa, Rampura Korianwalai villages gathered outside the DC office and raised slogans against the state government. They claimed that the government ordered to delay the sowing of paddy, despite that it failed to release adequate water in the canals for irrigating their fields.

They said the government should have released water in non-perennial canals by April 15.

The farmers were also not given promised eight- hour electricity supply to run the tubewells, alleged farmers Beant Singh, Ram Niwas, Harnam Singh and others.

They warned that if the water was not released in the canals immediately they would be forced to launch an agitation.
