A debt-ridden farmer identified as Surjit Singh (65) of Waryam Singh Wala village in Mamdot block of Ferozepur reportedly consumed poison on Saturday morning.

Surjit was under financial stress and was unable to make both ends meet for his family. One of his sons, Manpreet, had died a few years ago, and the responsibility of bringing up his family too was on Surjit.

His other son Jaspreet said his father had gone to the fields on Sunday morning around 7 am. “When I reached the field, I found him lying unconscious on a bed, following which we took him to a private hospital in the city,” he said.

“My father was reeling under a financial burden and bank officials besides commission agents used to visit him every now and then for recovery of their dues which perhaps drove him to take such an extreme step,” Jaspreet said. Surjit owned three acres of land.
