Muktsar, January 19

The Lambi police today booked local MLA and SAD’s Muktsar district president Kanwarjit Singh Rozy Barkandi’s cousin Gurbir Singh and five others for the rape of a 36-year-old Dalit woman.

The victim, who belongs to a village in Malout subdivision, is posted as a contractual employee at the Punjab School Education Board (PSEB), Mohali.

Those booked include Rozy’s aunt Manjit Kaur, her daughter Rajwant Kaur, another cousin, Paramjit Singh ‘Pamma’. The latter, who is scheduled to get married on Sunday, is the son of Beant Singh, Chief Agriculture Officer, Fazilka. They are residents of Fatehpur Manian village. Kulwinder Singh and Bira Singh were also booked. The case was registered under Sections 376-D, 377 and 506 of the IPC and Sections 25 and 27 of the Arms Act.

Jasveer Singh, SHO, Lambi police station, said, “The victim alleged that Gurbir raped her for almost one year on the pretext of promising to marry her. She said the others assisted him in the crime. The medical examination report is awaited.”

A family member of the accused, pleading anonymity, said, “This is a false case. The woman had sent some persons to extort money from us. When we refused, she concocted a story.”
