Chandigarh, January 28

About 41 kg of heroin with street value of over Rs 200 crore was seized by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence in Amritsar district of Punjab and one person was arrested in this connection.

The accused, identified as Jagdeep Singh, was arrested by DRI under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act after narcotics were found in his possesion, according to an official release issued by DRI (Ludhiana Zonal unit) on Wednesday.

"The heroin was found in a car, which was being used to transport the contraband, by the trafficker Jagdeep Singh," the release said.

Acting on a tip-off, DRI sleuths laid naka near Hakima gate in Amritsar and intercepted a car being driven by the accused. During the search of the car, a total of 41.3 kg of heroin was recovered, DRI officials said.

As per the initial investigation, the heroin was smuggled from the Indo-Pakistan border, near Tarn Taran district, the release said.

DRI officials further informed that Jagdeep Singh had been arrested for smuggling 13 kg of heroin in an earlier case in 2009 and had jumped parole and had been declared as proclaimed offender after that.

In early October last year, DRI had seized 40 kg of heroin near Ludhiana.

During the current financial year, DRI had been able to seize 94 kg of heroin so far, officials said.
