The tallest National Flag ever hoisted in Punjab was unfurled and dedicated to the people of the state by the Golden Arrow Division of the Army during a function organised on the eve of Republic Day today.

The National Flag has a 106-foot-high mast and it stands next to the giant statue of Lord Buddha on The Mall in the cantonment area. Major-General SC Meston, General Officer Commanding of the division, unfurled the flag in the presence of senior civil and police officials of the district.

The General Officer Commanding said the flag would further inspire the people of this “land of martyrs”. “The valour of the people of Punjab and their contribution to the Freedom Struggle has been unparalleled,” he said.

Senior officials, including VK Sharma, Commissioner; Munish Chawla, DIG, Ferozepur range; Hardial Singh Mann, SSP; and G Vijaya Bhaskar, CEO, were prominent among those present on the occasion. Schoolchildren, NCC cadets and residents of the border town were also present to witness the flag-hoisting ceremony.

Army officials said the expenditure on setting up the flag was borne by the Flag Foundation of India, a Delhi-based organisation set up by steel magnate Naveen Jindal.

“Besides motivating us to do our bit for the nation, the flag will also add to the grandeur of The Mall where several war monuments are already situated,” said G Vijaya Bhaskar, CEO.

“A feeling of patriotism engulfs the heart when you see this flag fluttering so high,” said Dr Praveen Dhingra, a local resident.
