They also scuffled with the deputy jail superintendent when the latter along with jail guards tried to overpower them.

In the melee, the jail alarm was sounded and the city police were alerted over phone. A team led by DSP Sukhvinder Singh reached the jail and brought the erring inmates under control. They were lodged in high-security cells.

Gangster Gurpreet Singh Ladi, who has 14 criminal cases pending against him, is serving a five-year term in the Hoshiarpur jail.

Yesterday too, he had tried to jump the wall of security block after which he was lodged in a separate block.

Ten other gangsters, including Daljit Bhana and those from the Jaggu gang, today tried to get him released after scaling the security wall.

Assistant Jail Superintendent Asha Nand said a complaint has been sent to city police for lodging and FIR against the accused.
